Elementary distance learning ideas

Post by pkja19 »

Hi Everyone! Tough when we are in a performance based discipline, and we might not necessarily want everything to be electronic with our youngest students. Here are a few ideas.

Kid-friendly websites for composer research:
https://www.mydso.com/dso-kids/learn-an ... /composers
https://www.classicsforkids.com/composers.html

Students can submit their research on a google slide, Flipgrid video https://info.flipgrid.com, create a poster with materials from home, or complete a simple worksheet.

Shared in the introductory GM Newsletter Fall 2017 https://www.rimea.org/gm/newsletters/fall_2017/, is an article about the Instrument Design Challenge workbook. Students use their imagination and recyclables from home, discuss pitch & volume with their family, and follow the engineering design process. This is aligned to the Grade 1 Sound science unit. Add on a composing component and have them perform on their instrument for extensions! Email me at my address in the article and I will send the workbook attachment to you directly. Attached here is another instrument property activity for the youngest students to engage in with families to observe properties of instruments, sort and count.

I'll be making short videos to Tweet with my sons next week of jump rope songs...some classic outdoor playground music and movement such as Teddy Bear, Cinderella, and Early in the Morning. Children just need family members to hold the ends of a rope (collaboration). Beat practice along with singing or chant!

Students can respond to music with a sibling or family member or FaceTime with a friend using a Listening Cootie Catcher. I learned my 2nd graders love folding these! Supply some recommended pieces to listen to that evoke imagery or feelings. I also have 2 others on TpT for composing and performing. Even if students don't have a printer at home, they can copy your categories and make one with paper and a pen.

Thinking of family engagement, this website has 50 songs to encourage family singing. https://www.fatherly.com/play/the-50-be ... -can-sing/

Hope these help! Stay well!

Karen
